And the Winners Are...
Congratulations to Vidusha Srivatsan, 6, of California, and Nikita Minocha, 10, of Massachusetts. Their stories won 1st place in Kahani’s Third Annual Young Writers and Illustrators Contest! Second place goes to Ananth Shastri, 8, and Sonia Khurana, 10, both of Massachusetts. Vaed Khurjekar, 8, of New Jersey, and Jasmine Bar, 9, of New York, are our 3rd place winners.

For a complete list of the winners and their stories, click here. We’ve also included a letter from Sonali Fry, Editorial Director at Little Simon, a division of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. Ms. Fry judged the submissions.

A big, BIG thanks to all the children who participated.

...and Now the Art Contest
Your task now is to illustrate Vidusha's and Nikita's stories. Salima Alikhan, illustrator of the new picture book Rocky Mountain Night Before Christmas, will judge your artwork. All entries must be postmarked by Friday, February 22, 2008.

First place writers and illustrators will have their work published in the Spring issue of Kahani. They will also get a check for $50 each. Our 2nd and 3rd place finishers will receive gift cards.

Spread the Word

How many languages are spoken in your household? Given that there are 18 languages recognized by the Indian government, chances are at least two are used everyday. Hinglish, anyone?

Writer Uma Krishnaswami kicks off 2008 with the touching story of Emilio and Maria. They are Mexican Hindu. Can you guess what pollo-murghi is?

Also in Word Up!, our Winter 2008 issue:
• Rukhsana Khan brings us Feroza. A typical 3rd grader, Feroza has trouble with the language of numbers.
• So why is it that children can learn languages much faster than their parents? It’s all in the brain. Science writer Paroma Basu explains.
• Anu Garg is a linguaphile. He’s also our Spotlight subject! Find out why words fascinate him.
• Ready to show off your language skills? Writer Anita Chaubal Yasuda shows you how in this Language Thali Memory Game.
• And so much more!

Let's Rock the Vote
Vote for me! Vote for me! Yes, 2008 is an election year and at Kahani, we’ll show how you can make a difference!

Spot on Family Ties
Nobody does family quite like we do. Why is everybody an aunty or an uncle anyways? Just in time for the summer, Kahani puts the spotlight on Family Ties.

Kahani in the News
When stumped for a gift, how do you decide what to buy? The folks at the Parents’ Choice Foundation have taken the guess work out of this pesky problem. Check out their newest Holiday Gift Guide. Anything look familiar? wOOt!

Thank You
2008 will mark the 4th year Kahani magazine has been coming to your mailbox. What started as a small, niche publication has grown to be an award-winning international quarterly with readers from around the world.

Because of you, we were able to win a major award from the Parents’ Choice Foundation this year. And because of you, we’ve been able to keep the magazine ad-free.

Many of you ask why we don’t publish any ads in Kahani. After all, that’s how magazines make money. The answer is simple: We don’t want to. As parents ourselves, we know how much advertising is targeted at our children every single day. At least during Kahani time, we want that time to be quiet and focused for your children.

That’s why every single subscription you buy is a stake in our future. But in order to keep our momentum growing, we need your help. You are our best ambassador. Tell your school or local library about Kahani. Organize a story time at your temple. Are you on a listserv from work or a professional association? It’s the perfect place to run a Kahani blurb. Are you active in your local temple or Sunday school? Buy a gift subscription. Searching for the ideal birthday present? Kahani fits the bill.

Help us spread the word. And thanks in advance.
