Kahani Wins
Award
The results are in and we are so happy to tell you
that Kahani won a 2006 Distinguished Achievement
Award sponsored by the prestigious Association of
Educational Publishers (AEP).
When conferring the award, the AEP judges said Kahani deftly incorporates excellence in editorial principals
and design elements, exhibits superb educational
value, and succeeds at engaging and sustaining reader
interest. Charlene
Gaynor, the executive director, added that “You
and your staff have helped define the standards of
excellence in
educational publishing."
The AEP is the professional organization for educational
publishers. Over 1,000 products were submitted for
recognition this year and of those, only three or
four are picked as finalists in each category. Past
winners in “The Whole Publication” category
include Scholastic Inc. We are thrilled to be in
the company of such esteemed publishers.
Thank you to all of our loyal subscribers.
Summer Fun!
From a juicy, lucy mango to ‘the boys of summer,’ we’ve
captured the best of the season in our upcoming issue.
• Instead of a lemonade stand, surprise your neighbors
with a nimbu pani stand. We’ll show you how!
• Can you guess which fruit is considered the king of
all summer fruits? It’s not the mango. Test your fruit IQ.
• Raksha Bandhan is no longer a ceremony just between
brothers and sisters. Writer Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen
writes an enchanting short story about this unique
festival that honors friendships.
• Not enough books on your summer reading list? Pooja
Makhijani has a few suggestions to make.
• We pick through our Mailbag and share some of your
letters.
Look for Summer Fun in your mailbox early August.
Sponsors – Rita and Mukesh Patel
Our thanks to Rita and Mukesh Patel of Mission Viejo,
California, for underwriting the Summer Fun issue of Kahani. We appreciate
their support of our mission to empower, educate, and entertain.
Rita and Mukesh Patel are the second Kahani family
to underwrite an issue. Deepika and Dr. Sanjay Prasad of Maryland
were the first. Won’t you consider sponsoring an issue too?
It’s easy. Write to marketing@kahani.com to find out how.
Holidays
Many of you have asked for short stories about the upcoming holiday
season. So:
• Rukhsana Khan writes about dueling sisters. Will they
ever make peace before Eid?
• Kashmira Sheth pens a story on garbha. Get your dancing
shoes out!
• Veera Hiranandani’s Kaveeta is disappointed her cousins
canceled their Thanksgiving trip at the last minute. What’s
going to happen to ALL that food her mom cooked up?
And so much more:
• Spotlight’s Sunita Williams is going to celebrate the
holidays…250
miles above Earth!
• Think you know all the major holidays in South Asia?
For Real! digs up some you may not have heard of….
• Get ready! We’re going to announce the next three words
for our annual short story writing contest in this issue!
Making Music with Narinder Dhami
We kick off 2007 with a Kahani issue dedicated to
Making Music. Narinder Dhami of Bend It Like Beckham fame is writing
a short story for this issue.
