Second place goes to Maya Varma, 8, and Sofia Ayesha Siqueria, 10, both from California. And Massachusetts’ Sonia Battacharyya, 7, and Nikita Minocha, 9, are our 3rd place winners.

A big thank you to all Kahani readers who participated in this year’s Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. You can see the work of the 1st place winners in our Food for Thought issue (in your mailbox by the end of May).

We will announce the three words for the next contest in September. Hope to see some of those same bylines again!

Kahani Wins Parents' Choice Award
When shopping for birthday or holiday gifts, many of you probably reach for toys that have those round stickers that say “Parents’ Choice Winner.” You know it’s a seal
of approval given only to products that meet the rigorous standards set by the Parents’ Choice Foundation, the leading authority on children’s media products.

Well, Kahani is now a 2007 Parents’ Choice Approved award winner. So next time you need to buy a gift for a friend, family member, or even your children’ s school or public library, reach for a Kahani gift subscription. We can

Food for Thought

In honor of Indian mangoes finally making their way to American shores, our Spring issue is dedicated to food. Coming up in Food for Thought:
-Jehangir Mehta is not your average dessert chef. His favorite flavor? Bitter.
-Spicy is actually a sensation of pain and heat on your tongue. Find out what to eat if you bite into a red chili by mistake.
-Speaking of mangoes, did you know that over 1,000 varieties of the fruit can be found in India and Pakistan?!

And in Short Stories:
-Baagh is up to no good. Will he behave at his cousin’s wedding? England’s Debjani Chatterjee delights in this tale
of a precocious boy we are all too familiar with!
-It’s been a year since Neel’s Dada passed away. Writer Pooja Makhijani tells us how this nine-year-old boy helps Dadi find comfort in food.

I Win, I Win, I Win!
But no one’s a loser with the Summer issue of Kahani, Games and Sports. It’s a keeper:
-Writer Uma Krishnaswami takes us on a rock climbing adventure. Hold on as Anik goes rappelling down!
-Just a few seconds left on the game clock. Can Samir dunk the basketball in time? Author Varsha Bajaj keeps score.
-Sarika’s kindergarten class is having a Guess Who game. Her brother thinks she should dress up as Princess Slimy Oozy. But Sarika has other ideas. Sachin Waikar returns with a delightful tale about a little girl who teaches her class about a very special Indian princess.

Also in Games and Sports:
-Narain Karthikeyan doesn’t drive at the speed limit. Nicknamed ‘the fastest Indian in the world,” Narain is an F1 car racer.
-If physical exercise poops you out, flex your mental muscle with some mind games, courtesy of the smart people at Mensa.
-The world’s number one chess player, India’s Anand Viswanathan, shares some of his winning tips with Kahani readers.
-And speaking of chess, did you know it’s thought to be based on the ancient Indian army? We explore how chess has become one of the world’s most popular board games.

Let the Celebration Begin
Many of you wrote to tell us how you enjoyed the Holidays issue last year. Due to popular demand, we’re making every Fall issue about the holidays. Here’s a sampler of the short stories we’re working on:
-Nana Abba has promised to buy Ahmad a Super Ninja set for Eid. Now Ahmad’s not so sure. His grandfather has been forgetting so many things recently. Will he remember his promise?
-It’s Deepak’s first Diwali in America. Find out what big Didi Nita does to make this a very special celebration.
-Nikhil is half Indian, half German. Both sets of grandparents are coming to visit him for Christmas. Can they all get along?

And so much more!
