Writing
Contest Open!
The cobra decided to go to school to vote…or
something like that! We know you can do better.
So here are the three new words for Kahani’s
Third Annual Young Writers and Illustrators Contest: cobra, school, and vote.
Remember, you must use all three words in your
stories. And be sure to read our writing tips
on our website because they really clue you into what
we look for when judging the entries. Click
here for complete
rules and an entry form. The deadline is Friday,
November 23, 2007.
The stories will be judged
by Sangeeta Mehta,
associate editor at Simon Pulse, an imprint of
Simon & Schuster
Children’s Publishing.
The winners will
be announced on our website at the end of January
2008. In part II of the
Kahani contest,
we’ll give a shout out to young
artists to illustrate the winning stories. As
the first prize, the top writers and illustrators
will
have their work published in the Spring 2008
issue of Kahani called Rock the
Vote. The winners
will
also receive a check for $50.00 each.
OK, so
where were we? Once he got to school, the
cobra…
Holidays
2007
We’re celebrating the upcoming festival season
in true desi style:
-Ahmad is so looking forward to Nana Abba coming
for the Eid holidays. Will he remember the money
he promised Ahmad to buy his Ninja Turtle set?
-Anil is celebrating his first Diwali in America.
What could go wrong?
-Nikhil grandparents are coming to Atlanta for
Christmas: Nani and Nana from India, and Oma and
Opa from Germany. Will they all get along?
And
so much more:
-Think you know all the major holidays in South
Asia? For Real! digs up some you may not have
heard of!
- In Smart Art, we show you step-by-step how
to make a special Holiday mandala.
-Spotlight’s Pia Awal is just happy to
celebrate the holidays. A cancer survivor, her
fight to live
has launched an international movement!
Look for
Holidays 2007 in your mailbox at the end of September.
Food for Thought
In honor of Indian mangoes finally making their
way to American shores, our Spring issue
is dedicated to food. Coming
up in Food for Thought:
-Jehangir Mehta is not your average dessert chef.
His favorite flavor? Bitter.
-Spicy is actually a sensation of pain and heat
on your tongue. Find out what to eat if you bite
into a red chili by
mistake.
-Speaking of mangoes, did you know that over 1,000
varieties of the fruit can be found in India and
Pakistan?!
And in Short Stories:
-Baagh is up to no good. Will he behave at his
cousin’s wedding?
England’s Debjani Chatterjee delights in this tale
of a precocious boy we are all too familiar with!
-It’s been a year since Neel’s Dada passed away. Writer
Pooja Makhijani tells us how this nine-year-old boy helps Dadi find
comfort in food.

Let the Celebration
Begin
We kick off 2008 with a Kahani issue dedicated to ‘language’:
-Feroza keeps borrowing money from her friend and
keeps promising to return the money. Will she keep her word? Written
by Rukhsana Khan and illustrated by Jen Singh.
-Emilio and his sister Maria are Mexican Hindus.
Is there more than language that separates them from their classmates?
Written by Uma Krishnaswami and illustrated by
Shachi Kale.
And so much more:
-Did you know Anu Garg of The Language Playground
is a linguaphile? We put the Spotlight on him
this issue.
-So why is it that kids can learn languages so
much faster than adults? Science writer Paroma
Basu explains in BrainFood.
Look for this issue
early next year.
We’re also working on Rock the Vote (Spring
2008) and Family (Summer 2008). Check out our
Editorial Calendar if you want to write for us!
Sponsors Needed
What do Rita and Mukesh Patel of California and
Deepika and Sanjay Prasad of Maryland have in
common? Answer: They’ve underwritten Kahani issues.
Most magazines make money by publishing ads. But as
you can see, Kahani is 100% ad-free and that’s
how we want to keep it. As parents ourselves,
we know how much marketing is aimed at our children
every single day.
Of course this policy means we end up relying
entirely on subscriptions to help us cover costs.
Many times, that’s
just not enough and we barely manage to keep
our heads above water. That’s why the generosity of
people like the Patels and the Prasads, who sponsored
one print run each,
makes such a difference. Won’t you consider underwriting
an issue? Write to marketing@kahani.com for details.
