2nd Annual Youth Writing Contest
We’ve picked the words, so start writing! There is no theme, but all the short stories must include the words cousin, river, and turmeric. The competition is open to those 6-8 and 9-11. The deadline for entries is Sunday, December 17, 2006. The stories will be judged by Sangeeta Mehta, associate editor at Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. Click here for complete rules and an entry form.

The two winners will be announced on our Web site at the end of January 2007. In part II of the Kahani contest, we will solicit artwork from children to illustrate the two entries. As the first prize, the winning writers and illustrators will have their work published in the Spring 2007 issue of Kahani. This contest is open to non-subscribers as well, so spread the word.

Holidays

We’re celebrating the holidays in true desi style:
• Writer Rukhsana Khan and artist Farida Zaman team up for “A Rosy Pink Eid.” Will Sameena and her sister ever make peace before Eid?
• With exquisite illustrations from Lara Lakshmi, novelist Kashmira Sheth pens a story on garbha. Get your dancing shoes out!
• Veera Hiranandani’s Kaveeta is disappointed her cousins cancel their Thanksgiving trip at the last minute. What’s going to happen to ALL that food her mom cooked up? (Here’s an interesting side note: illustrator Adnan Hussain comes from a very artistic family. Big brother Waqas Hussain is going to be illustrating for Kahani’s Winter 2007 issue, Making Music!)

And so much more:
• Spotlight’s Sunita Williams is going to celebrate the holidays…250 miles above Earth!
• Think you know all the major celebrations in South Asia? For Real! digs up some you may not have heard of….
• In Smart Art, we show you step-by-step how to make a one-of-a-kind mobile.

Look for Holidays in your mailbox by the end of October.

Write for Us!
Parents, all this writing and illustrating got you inspired? Well, write for us! Check out the new Submission Guidelines. We’ve put up our Editorial Calendar for all of next year. We’re working on Making Music right now, so hope to hear from some of you soon.

2007 Rolls in with Making Music
We kick off 2007 with a Kahani issue dedicated to Making Music. Narinder Dhami of Bend It Like Beckham fame is writing a short story for this issue. Vashanti Rahaman, who wrote for our Diaspora issue earlier this year, returns with a story for our younger readers. And Kahani is happy to welcome emerging writer Vijayalakshmi Chary into the family.

Any special features you want to read in this issue? Let us know at editor@kahani.com

Sponsors Needed
What do Rita and Mukesh Patel of California and Deepika and Sanjay Prasad of Maryland have in common? Well, they’ve both sponsored Kahani issues. As an ad-free magazine, Kahani depends entirely on subscription money to cover publishing costs. But many times, that is just not enough. That’s why we rely on the generosity of people like the Patels and the Prasads to help make ends meet. Besides getting our undying gratitude, these families also get a blurb in the magazine, as well as a permanent mention on our Web site. Want to sponsor an issue? Write to marketing@kahani.com. We will be oh so grateful.

Parent/Child Book Club – Interested?
We’re thinking of starting a Kahani Parent/Child Book Club. This is how it will work: we’ll pick a book with a South Asian theme (appropriate for 4th graders and above) and meet on a Sunday afternoon at a local library or bookstore. We’ll send out a discussion list in advance to help you prepare. There will be a moderator on hand, as well as the author if he/she happens to live in/be visiting the neighborhood! Since we are based in Massachusetts, we want to try it out here first. Can our Massachusetts subscribers drop us a line at editor@kahani.com and tell us if you would be interested or not? The book club should last about two hours and will take place in either Newton or Wellesley right before Thanksgiving. If the discussion is successful, we hope to repeat the format in other cities around the country.
