Sarika really wanted to play with other kids. She wished Claire and Anu and Isabella, her friends in first grade, could be here now. That would have been so fun.
“I think you would like to play with another little girl, yes?” Aji said, like she knew what Sarika was thinking.
Sarika’s eyes widened. Maybe her grandmother knew a girl in the neighborhood, one who hadn’t gone to school today.
“There is a little girl,” Aji said, “one who used to live here. And if we look really hard, maybe we can find her.”
Now Sarika was confused: she knew Aji and Ajoba lived in the house alone. She wondered where this girl could be, what she looked like, what games she liked.
“I know,” Aji said. She clapped once. “I will give you clues to help you find her.”
A mystery! “Can you tell me the first clue now?”
