There are very few children’s books that feature Sikh children; Navjot Kaur’s first picture book, A Lion’s Mane attempts to fill that void. The nameless protagonist —a little boy in a red dastaar, or turban—searches for understanding of his own identity and that of others. “The lion and its mane are special in many cultures around the world,” he tells readers and takes them on a journey from ancient Iran to medieval England to present-day Unites States. The book, full of colorful, dynamic illustrations, will empower young Sikh children and help them celebrate their identity.
